Gold Karats: Your Ultimate Guide to Gold Jewelry

There are many jewelry for sale in the Philippines, especially gold trinkets such as wedding and engagement rings. However, it is not the style or design of the jewellery that measures the value of gold. Instead, it should be measured in karat. What is a karat? According to Merriam-Webster, karat "is a measurement indicating the proportion of gold in an alloy out of 24 parts, so 18K gold is 18/24 parts gold." It is also acceptable to use the term "carat," which defines the fineness of gold.

How broad is your knowledge in gold karats? Make sure that buying gold jewelry for sale in the Philippines is worth it by choosing which one is the best for you. In this article, we will help you understand the different types of gold karats, the difference between gold-filled and gold-plated, and how to spot a fake gold.

Different types of karats of gold

Know the value of your gold by determining its karat, as follows:

24K Gold

It is the highest karat of gold, which consists of 100% pure gold. 24K gold is very pliable and easily scratched. That is why it is not possible for daily wear in the form of wedding, engagement rings, or other types of jewellery. Alternatively, it can make gold bars, coins, medical equipment, and electronic devices.

22K Gold

Its component is 8% alloyed metals and 92% gold. When gold is mixed with alloyed metals, the final product becomes stronger and more durable. However, keep in mind that it is still at its softest form due to the gold content.

18K Gold

It is considered as the most traditional mix of gold, which is a mixture of 25% alloyed metals and 75% gold. 18K gold pieces have a deeper yellow tone and a higher price than 14K. It is ideal for engagement rings and wedding rings in the Philippines as it is a symbol of a high quality piece of jewelry.

14K Gold

If you want to buy gold jewelry for sale in the Philippines, then this one's for you. 14K is a mix of 42% alloyed metals and 58% gold. It is a combination that can withstand wear and tear compared to 18K gold. It is perfect for everyday use such as a work accessory or for special occasions.

Gold-filled vs. Gold-plated

One of the things you should do when looking for gold jewelry for sale in the Philippines is to determine if it is gold-filled or gold-plated.

Gold-filled is--you guessed it right--filled with gold. It is generally preferred in the market because it stands next to pure 24K gold. Gold-filled engagement rings or wedding rings in the Philippines are considered lifetime products because they don't easily fade, chip, or tarnish. In terms of investment, some governments regulate its trading, which makes your investment well-protected.

On the other hand, gold-plated is a jewelry made from non-gold base metals and later dipped into molten gold. So, if you want an affordable wedding band or engagement ring, gold-plated jewelry is perfect for you.

How to check if a gold is fake

Spot a fake gold using the following tips:

  1. Acid test = make a small scratch on your gold jewelry and drop a small amount of liquid nitric acid onto the spot. If nothing happens, then the gold is real. Otherwise, it will turn green.
  2. Magnet test = this one is easy, and the safest way to identify genuine gold without scratching it. Find a stronger than average magnet. Try to pick the jewelry with it. If nothing happens, then you have real gold.
  3. Floating test = fill a cup with water and then drop your gold into it. If it sinks, rest assured your gold is genuine.
  4. Skin test = your skin should not react with real gold. But if you noticed black and green discolouration, unfortunately, you have fake gold.

However, the best way to spot a fake gold is to take it into a certified jeweller for inspection.
